Thoughtful last-minute gifts in the UK (digital and fast delivery)
The best last-minute gifts are the ones that feel planned: a theatre ticket, a voucher or a course they can start tonight. All seven below are estimated to arrive within a few days at most, and five are listed as digital.
We earn a commission if you buy through links on this page. It does not change the price you pay or the gifts we pick. Full details are in our affiliate disclosure.
Leaving a gift to the last minute is a skill, mostly the skill of not looking like you did. Tie the gift to something real about the person and say so on the card. Nobody minds that you shopped late. They mind that you shopped blind.
One honest note on speed first. Nothing in our catalogue is estimated to arrive next day. The fastest gifts are digital, and the physical ones start at about three days. I would rather tell you that than promise tomorrow and watch you sweat at the letterbox.
Digital gifts, estimated to arrive in minutes
1. Wicked tickets, from £31
Tickets for the long-running London musical at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, sold by Theatre Tickets Direct, which says seat numbers are guaranteed before you pay. They are tied to a date, so you need to know when the person is free. £31 is the cheapest seat; better ones cost more. The tickets are digital: they arrive by email or as a download to your phone wallet.
Why it passes: Memory and Story, because an evening out gets talked about for years. It is really a gift for two, so it suits a partner or a close friend. Longevity is low until the night itself. Ad · affiliate link See Wicked tickets at Theatre Tickets Direct
2. Six tickets, from £37.26
The musical about Henry VIII's six wives, staged like a pop concert. Theatre Tickets Direct showed it as on offer from £37.26, which can change. Same rule as above: pick a date they can do. The tickets are electronic, with check-in instructions from the venue about 48 hours before.
Why it passes: Story and Personal fit for anyone who likes music or history. Memory is high. Like Wicked, it is a gift for two in practice. Ad · affiliate link See Six tickets at Theatre Tickets Direct
3. Slug and Lettuce Sweet Treat Experience for Two, £10
A Buyagift voucher for a selection of mini desserts for two at Slug and Lettuce, which Buyagift says has 50 locations. Buyagift shows only three reviews, so do not oversell it, and check the nearest branch and the expiry date.
Why it passes: Memory, because it is an outing. Low on Longevity until it is used. Ad · affiliate link See it at Buyagift
4. Rent a Movie with CHILI, £5.99
A film rental voucher from Buyagift that suits anyone who watches films, whatever they like. It is the cheapest and least personal option, so keep it for the person you cannot read at all.
Why it passes: Frequency, since people watch films all the time. Low on Memory and Personal fit, which is why it is fourth. Ad · affiliate link See it at Buyagift
5. Online Blogging, Vlogging and Social Media Influencer Bundle Course, £29.99
A Buyagift online course bundle for one person who wants to start posting online. I cannot vouch for the teaching, and it is no use unless they have said they want to do this.
Why it passes: Personal fit decides everything here. Right person, it scores well on Frequency and Longevity. Wrong person, it is a very expensive way to be forgotten. Ad · affiliate link See it at Buyagift
Physical gifts, estimated 3 to 4 days
These are catalogue estimates, not courier guarantees. If the big day is within three days, skip this section.
6. Guided Factory Tour at Triumph Motorcycles for One, £33
A guided tour at the Triumph factory in Hinckley, sold as an experience by Red Letter Days, which showed it at 4.5 out of 5 from two reviews. It only works for someone who likes bikes, and they will need to book a date after the voucher arrives.
Why it passes: Story and Memory are strong. Personal fit is narrow but deep. Longevity is low until they go. Ad · affiliate link See it at Red Letter Days
7. Journaling Letterbox Gift, £23
A letterbox-sized box from Social Stories Club with an A5 journal, chocolate and other treats made by social enterprises. Social Stories Club says it is suitable for vegetarians. Delivery estimate is about four days.
Why it passes: Personal fit if they write, read or like stationery. Story, because the contents come from social enterprises and the box says so. The journal gives it more staying power than most last-minute treats. Ad · affiliate link See it at Social Stories Club
How to make a rushed gift feel planned
Write a card. Say why you chose it, in a sentence that could only be about them. "You still quote that film at parties" beats "Happy birthday, hope you like it". The card is the cheapest part of the gift and does most of the work.
Print the voucher or put the confirmation in an envelope, so there is something to hand over. A forwarded email looks like an afterthought, even when the gift is lovely.
If the gift will arrive after the day, say so and make it part of the joke. Hiding it is worse.
For the full method, read how we pick. It sets out the five-point test used above: Longevity, Memory, Personal fit, Frequency and Story.
Last-minute gift questions
Can a last-minute gift still be thoughtful?
Yes. Thoughtful comes from fit, not from how early you started. Pick something tied to a real interest, then write a card that says why. A rushed gift that clearly fits the person beats a planned one that could have gone to anyone.
What digital gifts work best at the last minute?
Ones tied to something they have said they like: a theatre ticket, a voucher for a treat, a film rental or a course. Avoid generic gift cards where you can. Digital gifts are estimated to arrive in minutes, but check each retailer's own delivery details.
How fast can I get a gift delivered in the UK?
Digital gifts are estimated as instant. In our catalogue, physical gifts start at about three days, and nothing is estimated for next day. These are estimates, not courier guarantees, so check the retailer's cut-off dates and allow a few days either side.
What if the gift arrives after the day?
Give a card on the day that says what is coming and why you chose it. Most people are happy to wait a few days for something that clearly fits them. Do not try to hide it. A confident "it is on its way" works better than an excuse.
Does Mind The Gift cost anything to use?
No. It is free, and you do not need an account to get recommendations. We earn a commission if you buy through some links, which is how we pay for it. Links are labelled as affiliate links before you click, and our affiliate disclosure has the detail.
Want something more specific?
Short on time? The Mind The Gift quiz asks who the gift is for and how soon you need it, and filters by the catalogue's estimated delivery. There is also an Emergency Mode button inside the quiz for when you are properly stuck. It is free and needs no sign-up. Try the quiz.
