Anniversary and jewellery gifts without panic-buying

The best anniversary gift is one you chose early enough to do properly: a piece of jewellery with a reason behind it, or a shared evening booked ahead. For made-to-order jewellery, order about three weeks before the date.

Anniversaries have a way of arriving faster than you expect. The date was fixed years ago, and it still manages to surprise people.

Jewellery is where panic-buying hurts most, because the wrong ring size or the wrong metal cannot be hidden. Six ideas below, four jewellery and two not, with the lead times stated. I have only listed what I can link to and have price checked on the date above.

Jewellery: order about three weeks ahead

All four come from Finediam. Its site says in-stock items take one to two days, and everything else, including bespoke pieces, about 15 working days, with free insured Royal Mail shipping. Our catalogue estimates 21 days. Leave three weeks, and a few days spare. Finediam is running a sale at the moment, so check the price on the page before you buy.

1. Round-Cut Diamond Pendant, from £74.52

A solitaire necklace in white gold. The £74.52 version is 9K gold with a 0.1ct lab-grown diamond, and the page offers natural or lab-grown stones with prices climbing steeply as the stone grows. It says the piece carries a UK Assay Office hallmark and is made by a Hatton Garden maker.

Why it passes: Longevity and Frequency, because a small pendant is worn daily. Personal fit if they wear simple jewellery. Story is thin until you add a card saying why you chose it. Ad · affiliate link See it at Finediam

2. Gold-Plated Twisted Hoop Earrings, £97.44

Silver-base hoops with 18K gold plating. The page lists five sizes from 15mm at £55.39 to 35mm at £139.57, and £97.44 is the 25mm. It describes them as lightweight, waterproof and skin safe, and gives a six-month warranty. Plating wears over time, so I would not call these a lifetime piece.

Why it passes: Frequency, because earrings get worn weekly. Personal fit is the risk, so check what metal colour they wear. Lower Longevity than solid gold, at a friendlier price. Ad · affiliate link See it at Finediam

3. Lab Emerald and Diamond Teardrop Necklace, £230.04

A pear-cut lab-grown emerald of 2.40ct on sterling silver, with 0.08ct of diamonds. It is a statement piece at a mid price. The page is clear that the emerald is lab-grown, so say so if they ask.

Why it passes: Memory and Story, because it is a green stone and a bold choice, which suits an anniversary. Fit is the question: only buy it for someone who wears a statement piece. Ad · affiliate link See it at Finediam

4. 9-Stone Princess Cut Half Eternity Ring, from £387.29

A half-eternity ring in gold or platinum, from £387.29 up to £4,980.10 depending on metal and stone, with lab-grown or natural options. Finediam's site lists free resizing. Do not guess the size. Borrow a ring they already wear on that finger and measure it.

Why it passes: Longevity and Story, the strongest of the four. Ring size and style are the risks, which is why this is the one to plan for, not panic-buy. A ring says something, so be sure it says what you mean. Ad · affiliate link See it at Finediam

Not jewellery: two safer ideas

5. Champagne Afternoon Tea at Grinkle Park for Two, £68.99

A long afternoon, sold by Red Letter Days with a free instant e-voucher by email and 12 months to use it. Grinkle Park is in North Yorkshire, so check it is somewhere you will go.

Why it passes: Memory, and an anniversary suits a slow afternoon. It is the right choice if you left it late: the voucher is instant, so nothing needs to arrive in the post. Ad · affiliate link See it at Red Letter Days

6. Photo Book, large hardcover, from £39.99

Smartphoto's large hardcover starts at £39.99 for 20 pages, with extra pages at 60p each and free lay-flat binding. Postage is extra and our estimate is about 12 days. A year of photos in order is a better anniversary gift than most things with a price tag.

Why it passes: Memory and Story. You make it, so Personal fit is as high as it gets. Not a last-week gift, so start now. Ad · affiliate link See it at Smartphoto

How to avoid the panic

Decide the type of gift a month ahead, and the actual piece two weeks ahead. A rushed ring is usually the wrong ring.

Check what metal they wear. Look in their jewellery box, or at what is on them. Silver and gold do not mix in everyone's taste.

Know the returns terms before you buy. Finediam says unworn items in original packaging can be returned within 30 days, with some exceptions listed on its site, so read them, especially for made-to-order pieces.

For the full method, read how we pick. It sets out the five-point test used above: Longevity, Memory, Personal fit, Frequency and Story.

Anniversary and jewellery questions

What jewellery should I buy for an anniversary if I do not know their style?

Keep it simple and classic: a small pendant or plain hoops in a metal they already wear. A plain piece they wear daily beats a statement piece that stays in a drawer. Check their jewellery box first, and pick the one they would wear tomorrow.

How far ahead should I order anniversary jewellery?

About three weeks. Finediam says in-stock items take one to two days, but everything else, including bespoke pieces, takes about 15 working days. Our catalogue estimates 21 days. These are estimates, not courier guarantees, so leave a week spare. Order earlier for rings, in case you need a resize.

Should I buy lab-grown or natural diamonds?

Neither is better for everyone. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds and cost less for a given size. Natural stones carry a premium for rarity. Finediam offers both on several pieces, so choose on budget and what matters to the person, and check the page for which one you are buying.

Can I return anniversary jewellery if it does not fit?

Finediam says unworn items in original packaging can be returned within 30 days, with some exceptions, and lists free resizing for rings. Read the returns page before you buy, especially for made-to-order pieces, because exceptions may apply to them. Keep the packaging until you are sure.
